Full Story & Plot Synopsis

Developed by Will Smith and based on the acclaimed Slough House spy novel series by Mick Herron, the critically celebrated British espionage thriller series Slow Horses made its global premiere on Apple TV+ on April 1, 2022. Produced by See-Saw Films and Flying Music, the six-episode first season launched with a two-episode debut before continuing with weekly releases. The debut season earned overwhelming critical acclaim for its razor-sharp wit, realistic depiction of intelligence work, and stellar lead performances, quickly becoming a flagship tentpole series for Apple TV+ and securing multiple award nominations and multi-season renewals. WHERE TO WATCH & STREAMING AVAILABILITY Slow Horses streams globally exclusively on Apple TV+, available in 4K Ultra HD resolution with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio support. Digital transactional video-on-demand services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV offer season pass options for digital purchase in select territories. Physical home media releases, including complete season DVD and Blu-ray box sets, have been issued through independent home entertainment distributors. INTRIGUING FACTS & TRIVIA Academy Award winner Gary Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, delivering a career-defining performance as the flatulent, slovenly, yet brilliant leader of Slough House. The series theme song, Strange Game, was co-written and performed specifically for the show by legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician Mick Jagger alongside composer Daniel Pemberton. Unlike traditional television production schedules, the show was greenlit with back-to-back season filming schedules, allowing tight, seamless continuity between successive seasonal storylines. BACKSTORY & THEMATIC ANALYSIS The narrative follows River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), a promising young MI5 agent who gets demoted following a high-profile, embarrassing failure during a live training exercise at Heathrow Airport. Relegated to Slough House—an administrative dumping ground for MI5 outcasts and screw-ups known derisively as slow horses—River is forced to do mind-numbing paperwork under the watchful, insulting eye of his washed-up boss, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). When a young British-Pakistani student is kidnapped by a far-right extremist group threatening a live online execution, the forgotten agents at Slough House uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving high-ranking MI5 leadership at Regent's Park, led by Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas). Refusing to stay on the sidelines, Lamb and his team of misfits use their unconventional skills to save the hostage and protect their own skin. Thematically, Slow Horses explores bureaucratic incompetence, political cynicism, redemption, and the unsung reality of intelligence work. By contrasting flawed, discarded individuals against a polished, ruthless intelligence establishment, the story demonstrates that competence and integrity often reside in the most overlooked places. BEHIND-THE-SCENES INSIGHTS Director James Hawes and cinematographer Danny Cohen utilized low-key lighting, muted color palettes, and realistic, grimy London location sets to contrast the dingy atmosphere of Slough House against the sleek, modern glass of MI5 headquarters. Composers Daniel Pemberton and Toydrum created a gritty, jazz-infused musical score that mirrors the unglamorous, chaotic nature of the slow horses' investigations. Through its sharp writing, dark humor, and masterclass ensemble performances, Slow Horses stands as one of the finest modern additions to espionage television.
