Full Story & Plot Synopsis
Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, the animated adult action drama television series Arcane (subtitled League of Legends) premiered globally on Netflix on November 6, 2021, concluding its story with a acclaimed second season in November 2024. Produced by Riot Games in partnership with French animation studio Fortiche, the series is set within Riot's League of Legends fictional universe, serving as a landmark prestige television adaptation. The series achieved monumental global success, making history as the first streaming animated series to win Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, while earning universal critical praise for its painterly animation, complex character writing, world-building, and musical score. WHERE TO WATCH & STREAMING AVAILABILITY Arcane is hosted for subscription streaming globally exclusively on Netflix, presented in high definition and 4K Ultra HD resolution with High Dynamic Range, Dolby Atmos audio, original English audio, and multi-language dubbing options. Digital video-on-demand purchase options and physical home media collector sets, including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and SteelBook editions with behind-the-scenes documentaries, are distributed via distribution partners following its streaming run. INTRIGUING FACTS & TRIVIA French studio Fortiche spent over six years developing the show's distinct visual style, which fuses hand-painted digital 2D backgrounds with 3D character animation to create a living oil painting aesthetic. Acclaimed voice actress Hailee Steinfeld voices lead protagonist Vi, while Ella Purnell delivers a legendary performance as her tragic sister Powder, who transforms into the chaotic villain Jinx. The series soundtrack features custom hit original songs created specifically for pivotal narrative scenes by major global recording artists, including Imagine Dragons, Bea Miller, Woodkid, Twenty One Pilots, and Stromae. BACKSTORY & THEMATIC ANALYSIS Set in the utopian, wealthy city of Piltover and its oppressed, dark undercity Zaun, the story explores the growing socioeconomic tensions between the two societies. The narrative focuses on orphan sisters Vi and Powder, who grow up in Zaun under the protective care of father figure Vander. Following a botched heist in Piltover involving dangerous magical gemstones, a devastating tragedy tears the sisters apart, leading Powder to be adopted by Silco, a ruthless Zaunite crime lord who transforms her into the unstable, explosive Jinx. Meanwhile, in Piltover, brilliant young scientist Jayce Talis and his partner Viktor pioneer Hextech, a revolutionary technology that harnesses arcane magic through scientific machinery. As political corruption, military escalation, and dangerous biological shimmer drugs bring Piltover and Zaun to the brink of civil war, Vi and Caitlyn Kiramman team up to track down Jinx, forcing the estranged sisters onto opposing sides of a devastating regional conflict. Thematically, Arcane explores trauma, sisterhood, class inequality, scientific ethics, and political corruption. By demonstrating how systemic oppression and personal loss drive desperate people to violence, the narrative illustrates that ideological warfare destroys innocent families on both sides of the divide. BEHIND-THE-SCENES INSIGHTS Directors Pascal Charrue and Arnaud Delord worked closely with fight coordinators to incorporate realistic martial arts physics and camera movements into the show's action sequences. The musical score blends orchestral instrumentation with modern electronic, hip-hop, and rock motifs, creating distinct soundscapes for the golden architecture of Piltover and the neon-lit alleys of Zaun. Through its groundbreaking animation, rich emotional storytelling, and unforgettable tragic character arcs, Arcane stands as a defining masterpiece in modern animated television.
