The film achieved significant commercial success at the Nigerian box office, earning praise from audiences and critics for its sharp social commentary, humorous family dynamics, and strong lead performances by Ramsey Nouah, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, and Nse Ikpe-Etim. WHERE TO WATCH & STREAMING AVAILABILITY The Polygamist is featured across cinema screens, including Filmhouse Cinemas, Silverbird Cinemas, and Genesis Cinemas. Following its theatrical run, the feature is scheduled to launch for subscription streaming globally on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in late 2026. Digital video-on-demand purchase options and home media distribution rights are managed via FilmOne Entertainment. INTRIGUING FACTS & TRIVIA The movie marks a major reunion between acclaimed lead actors Ramsey Nouah and Mercy Johnson-Okojie, who previously starred together in several iconic classic Nollywood hit dramas. Director Jeta Amata incorporated real traditional marriage customs from various Nigerian ethnic groups to highlight the diverse cultural backgrounds of the protagonist's multiple wives. The production crew constructed a massive, custom-built family mansion set in Lagos to showcase the lavish yet chaotic domestic environment central to the narrative. BACKSTORY & THEMATIC ANALYSIS The narrative revolves around Chief Chief Okey Ekwueme (Ramsey Nouah), a wealthy, charismatic Lagos businessman who proudly manages a complex household consisting of three distinct wives. His first wife, the refined and traditional Angela (Nse Ikpe-Etim), maintains order over domestic affairs, while his fiery second wife, the sharp-witted businesswoman Bisi (Mercy Johnson-Okojie), manages the family's retail enterprises. Chaos erupts when Chief Okey secretly decides to marry a much younger fourth wife, sparking a hilarious and cutthroat war of attrition among his spouses. Determined to protect their inheritance, status, and emotional standing, the three wives form an unlikely alliance to expose Chief Okey's financial secrets, sabotage his new courtship, and bring him to his knees. As domestic maneuvering, corporate backstabbing, and family secrets threaten to dismantle his business empire, Chief Okey is forced to confront the harsh reality of his choices and learn that managing a polygamous household requires far more than wealth and ego. Thematically, The Polygamist explores modern marital politics, female solidarity, greed, domestic power dynamics, and the evolution of traditional cultural practices in modern urban society. By framing a complex domestic struggle around female empowerment and unity, the narrative demonstrates that true respect cannot be bought or demanded through patriarchal authority. BEHIND-THE-SCENES INSIGHTS Director Jeta Amata worked closely with cinematographer Jonathan Kovel to craft warm, vibrant visual lighting that accentuates the colorful high-fashion wardrobes and opulent home interiors. The film's soundtrack blends modern Highlife rhythms with contemporary Afrobeats tracks to complement the comedic pacing and dramatic turns of the family saga. Through its witty dialogue, vibrant cultural representation, and standout ensemble performances, The Polygamist delivers an engaging, thought-provoking addition to contemporary African cinema.
